Decompression Warrenville IL | Back Pain? Chronic Or Acute - What Is The Difference?

by firmbodies.com on Nov.30, 2009, under Back Pain, Health and Fitness

At some point in our lives, 80% of all Americans are going to experience back pain. Back pain is becoming a common complaint heard by doctors, health practitioners and in emergency care facilitates all over the country.  Back pain can occur when you least expect it, and for what appears to be an ordinary incident.

One would think that a slight sneezing fit or a cough to clear your throat is innocent enough, but the simple act of sneezing or coughing or just bending over to pet the cat can cause muscles to strain or sprain and cause extreme pain. Regardless of how you hurt your back, the pain can be unbearable.

There are two types of pain; chronic and acute.  Back pain can occur with both. Chronic back pain is often described as a deep, aching dull pain in one area of the back and comes on slowly. People who suffer from this type of back pain have often reported a tingling or numbness sensation that at times will travel down the legs.  Chronic back pain tends to last for long periods of time, and because it sometimes resists standard medical treatments, it can make life miserable for those who suffer from it.  They find every day activities very difficult or nearly impossible to perform.

Acute pain is the result of over stretched or strained muscles and ligaments.  Acute back pain comes on suddenly, is sharp in nature and attacks more than one area of the back. And like certain injuries it happens fast and it’s painful.   Acute pain is severe immediately after an injury and may worsen during the first few hours of an injury. Acute back pain can happen at any time, but unlike chronic pain, acute pain is not resistant to standard medical treatments. In many people with back pain their acute pain will eventually become chronic pain.

There are a few things you can do, in addition to what your doctor recommends, to help lessen or alleviate your back pain. First take your back pain seriously, don’t ignore it and if it persists after an injury for more than 24 hours, see a doctor. In everyday life practice good posture, especially if you work at a desk all day. Always stretch before doing any activity as this will loosen your muscles and ligaments and get them ready to work for you. Even a daily half hour walk around your neighborhood three times a week will help to straighten your spine and align your posture.

Whether it’s acute or chronic, back pain can disrupt everyday life.  Being in constant pain, be it a dull ache or a sharp stab, can take the joy out of life. However, it can be treated with attention to the initial injury, doctor recommended treatments, physical therapy and patience. Be careful out there.

Neck Pain Help Indianapolis IN | Headaches Should Not Be Chronic

by firmbodies.com on Nov.29, 2009, under Back Pain, Health and Fitness

There are many reasons for headaches.  You may have slept in the wrong position, worked too many hours in the hot sun or in front of a hot computer.  Or you may have slept in the wrong position in the bathtub after too many margaritas.  All of these are valid reasons for some pain in the brain.  However, whatever the cause, headaches should not be chronic.

If you are suffering from mild to moderate or severe skull pain on a daily basis, this is a sign something is not right in your world.  If it’s because you’re hungover on a daily basis, seek help.  If you aren’t drinking every night away and are still experiencing an aching cranium on a daily basis, it is also cause for concern and looking for aid, although of a different kind.

There can be many reasons behind chronic and/or persistent headaches.  Because pain is subjective, it is often hard to describe.  This is especially true in the case of headaches because there is rarely any exterior sign. (If you are chronically experiencing skull pain due to obvious exterior causes that involve bleeding or large bumps and bruises, even in the current economy, you might want to seek a different line of work.)

You can describe the pain as stabbing or throbbing or pounding and maybe give a location, and sometimes this will even aid in the diagnosis, but sometimes it will not, again due to the subjective nature.  While it is natural to immediately panic and worry that you’re suffering from a brain tumor, that is very rarely the cause, and it is prudent to look for other reasons first.

One of the most common reasons for headaches is eyestrain.  This may be because you need glasses — something a lot of us hate to admit, as it means acknowledging aging — or to have your current prescription strengthened or changed.

If you find yourself squinting a lot, this is a pretty good sign.  It may also be that you just need to take a break from staring at the screen, into the microscope, or at the blueprints every now and again to let your eyes rest.  It’s wise to get your eyes checked at least once a year anyway, so this might be something to mention to your eye doctor.

Another common cause of headaches is allergies.  Your sinuses get stuffed up from the pollen and spores or cat hair and grass.  That puts pressure on them, and you get pain.  There is a wide range of prescription and over-the-counter allergy medications, some of which work better for different people than others, so a little experimentation may be called for.  Some people are allergic to certain of the medications themselves, so be cautious.

Probably the most common cause of headaches is neck strain.  This can come from sitting wrong, sleeping funny, or any number of other things. You may be able to work out the pain yourself, but if this is a consistent problem in your life, you might be advised to visit a chiropractor in order to get the kinks worked out and learn how to keep them gone.
